I will begin by saying I enjoyed this book immensely. Laura Dave is a brilliant writer and has such a poetic and vibrant writing style. She seamlessly blends the vineyard that is the backdrop of this family story with the characters and what each character was experiencing. I also learned a ton about wine making and how much work it takes to make just one bottle.
While Georgia Ford is the main character, you are taken on a journey with the entire Ford family while reading this book. We are introduced to the Ford family, Dan and Jen, the parents, Bobby and Finn the brothers, and Georgia the daughter. Georgia is supposed to be getting married in a matter of days, but when she comes face to face with the secrets and lies her fiance Ben has been keeping from her, she flees from her life in Los Angeles to go back home to her family’s vineyard. Although she is consumed by her own personal issues, she begins to discover that she is not the only member of the Ford family whose future seems uncertain.
What ensues is a story of how adult children realize that their parents are not only their mom and dad, they are also people who had an entire life before becoming parents and they have their own issues as a married couple, and a family who bands together to save what it is they love most.
This book is a wonderful and realistic view inside the life of a typical American family, with incredibly rich characters who go on a journey of self-discovery and learn how to deal with the cards life has dealt them.
It’s a great book to bring to the beach, or just read anywhere. It’s impossible to put down, and Laura Dave is an amazing writer. This story sucks you right in and doesn’t let go until the last page. It has so much to offer, a tale of what it means to be a family, how secrets and lies effect relationships, and how it’s never too late to find your passion.
